Katherine.”

Turning with a smile, ready to greet the man she assumed was a fan, Kat paused. “Yes?”

An elderly gentleman moved toward her in an achingly slow shuffle with the help of a sturdy cane. When he reached for her with his free hand, she politely grasped it and was surprised when he slipped something into her palm.

“What is this?” she asked with a smile. It wasn’t unusual for fans to treat her with little gifts. His grip turned firmer, preventing her from looking at the object wrapped in a white handkerchief. Peering at his weathered face, she noticed his lips tremble before he spoke.

“It belongs to you.” His voice groveled. “Please, take it.”

“What?” Her brow creased as she tried to take a step back, but the man held tightly to her hand, not letting go. His wrinkled skin was warm with noticeable age spots, his gumption perplexing. She’d met her fair share of star-struck fans but never one as old as the man standing before her, and never one who called her by her birth name.

A plaid scarf tied around his neck peeked from under his buttoned-up wool coat, and a dapper hat perched on top of his white head. When she looked directly into his gaze, she felt a flash of recognition but couldn’t quite place him. Was he a friend of her parents? Perhaps he was a long-time board member whom Pete had introduced her to?

Searching his expression, his blue-gray eyes, the color of the deep sea crinkled into a melancholy smile before he reluctantly broke their connection and let go of her hand.

“Thank you for the music.” He took off his hat and held it at his chest, his action chivalrous and endearing. “It was…breathtaking. You are breathtaking.”

“Thank you,” she replied simply, not able to tear her stare away from his while clutching the unknown object in her hand. “What is your name?”

Before the man could respond, Pete Alexander appeared next to her, diverting her attention. “Please, excuse the interruption.” His slight nod toward the elderly man was polite. “Kat, I want to introduce you to a few of our VIP season ticket holders. I hope you don’t mind taking a photo or two with them. They’re extremely eager to meet you.”

“Oh, yes. Of course. I don’t mind at all.”

Pete lightly grasped her by the elbow and turned her toward the party. She offered him a brief smile before she turned her attention back to the older man to bid him farewell. To her astonishment, the man had already walked away and was about to enter the open elevator.

“Wait!” Flustered, she broke free from Pete, her steps brisk as she trotted across the carpet to catch up to him. “Please, wait! I don’t even know your name.”

As the doors closed with a ding, the stranger dipped his head in a short nod, his gaze a haunting expression of blue-gray melancholy.

Standing there with her hands fisted at her sides, flummoxed by his sudden disappearance, a flash of remembrance filtered through her memory – the portrait

His expressive eyes were exact replicas of the photo in the Hall of Fame. They were the mature eyes of Phillip Gordon in full Technicolor.
