Arlo read a large sign passing by on the boulevard.

KILL ALL BOTS!

“What the hell is Razor doing?”

“She’ll be fine. She does it all the time.”

“Does what all the time? Never mind. Don’t tell me. We have to stop her.”

Zen crossed her legs, tapped the console with long, golden nails and stared past the protest.

“You stop her.”

He watched Razor lift a helmet off the ground and put it on, pumping her fist as she walked into the chanting crowd.

“I can’t be in a protest, Zen. I have a career to protect.”

“Sounds inconvenient.”

“Don’t we have somewhere to be?”

“And we’ll get there.”

“This is ridiculous,” he said, stepping out of the pod. He tried to spot her. Nothing but angry strangers. Walking towards the crowd, he felt the electric energy of frustration.

“PEOPLE OVER BOTS! PEOPLE OVER BOTS!”

He stood at the edge of the moving spectacle and scanned for Razor.

Against the grain of the crowd, he spotted the oversized biker’s helmet with flowing blonde locks extending beyond the edges. She grabbed a bat off the ground near a closed psychedelics store.

“Razor, no!” he yelled, his voice drowned by the raging chorus.

Was writing your first love?

Yes. I gravitated towards writing as a child and have been drawn to it ever since.

Where do you like to write?

My favorite place to write is at my desk. I like a controlled environment with no distractions when writing, which is something I can create at home if my cat lets me.

Is writing everything you thought it would be?

It’s amusing to me how the fear of creating never goes away. You just have to trust yourself and write. When I started to take the craft more seriously, I didn’t realize how much courage it would take to keep going.

Who is/was your favourite character to write about?

As I continue to work on The Blank Series, I often feel connected to the main character, Aura Swain. Luckily, I love her.

How do you form your story ideas?

I write stories that I would want to read. This means my fiction needs to coincide with my interests and curiosities. Intuition and imagination play large roles in shaping how these stories develop.

Do you keep notes during the day? (In case something inspires you or, if you had a lively conversation and thought, “Hey that would be great in a book.”)

Yes, definitely. I am always open to random inspiration. Notes are essential!

Do you write in one sitting or in bursts?

I normally write in one sitting each day when I am working on a story. Occasionally, I also write in bursts if the muse decides to visit during off-hours.

What was the last book you read? Did it live up to your expectations?

“It Didn’t Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle” by Mark Wolynn. It’s a profound book. I highly recommend it.

What are some of your most difficult parts to write?

Violence and gore can be challenging, but necessary for authenticity in some scenes.

Did this story follow your original plan? Or did it turn into something completely different?

“Madam Doesn’t Like That” went how I planned, with a few surprises. For instance, it dawned on me that Madam Siren Opia, the Supreme Leader of the Solar Government, has not just one husband--but two! They, of course, only have her.

Did your characters ever stop talking to you at any point in your writing?

Not with story four. However, with the third story in the series, the supporting characters gave me a sense that I’d have to learn more about the prison planet they were stuck on before they opened up to me.

Was it hard to stay motivated during your writing process? What were some of your go-to strategies to stay on point?

During the early drafts of this story, I wondered if I would ever finish it because of all the details and scenes I felt urged to include in just one installment. I’m thrilled to have completed it, and I couldn’t have done it without a disciplined writing routine. I’ve accepted there will be good and bad writing days--and that’s okay.

Do you have a playlist for this story? Or any song that helped you develop a scene?

Yes, I have playlists for all the stories in The Blank Series. I mostly use them for brainstorming as many of the songs have lyrics and I write with instrumental music. The song “Diamonds” by Megan Thee Stallion and Normani helped me brainstorm the beginning scene of this installment.

Lastly, what is one key piece of advice you would give to anyone wishing to go down the writing path?

If you feel the pull to be a writer, then write. Make it a habit. Write what you would want to read. And keep going!
