March Madness has begun and college basketball playoffs are heating up, not that Robert Walker—a graduate student from Texas—particularly cares. He has decided to skip classes for the day, sleep in, and get some rest. Unfortunately, a brief spat on the phone with his fiancée makes that impossible. Hoping to take his mind off of it, he scans through TV channels in search of entertainment and instead finds one news report after another that warns of violence erupting in the streets.

People are randomly and savagely attacking one another all along the East Coast from Maine to Florida. Some speculate it may be related to strange lights that have appeared in the sky above the outbreaks. Before any solid conclusions can be drawn, however, the brutality spreads, sweeping across the country until it hits Houston, then proceeds on to the West Coast. Robert, a handful of classmates, and a few others manage to survive the first wave and find themselves in the midst of civilization’s blackest hour, surrounded by pandemonium, bloodshed, and masses of people who have been stripped of their humanity. Hours later, as those strange lights continue to dominate the sky, the vicious horde undergoes a new transformation.

There is no escaping the horror. Unable to reach his fiancée by phone, Robert sets out to find her, joined by a small ensemble of fellow survivors. The thirty-five miles they must cover are fraught with danger, and their terror grows with each step they take as they witness the genesis of a new Earth. Can they find a way to stop it? Will they even survive it?

Let’s start with, how are you this fine day?
•I am doing very well. Thank you for asking. I’m very excited about my new release.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
•I always ask myself, “What if. . .” From there I plug in difference ideas, and this was the result of them.

When did you write your first book and how old were you?
•When I was in college. Before that I wrote short stories and poetry.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
•Play music. I love classical, film, rock, jazz and Johnny Cash.

What does your family think of your writing?
•They like it, even those who read other genres.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
•I had to research aspects of NASA and SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) and nuclear submarines. In a word: wow.

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
•THE LIGHT: HOUSTON, TEXAS is my second published book. However, I have several trunk novels that I am rewriting to reflect the ever-changing technical world in which we live. I really don’t have a favorite. Each of them has something I really like. There are also several others in the works, including an anthology, which will release next.

Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
•I love hearing from readers and receive both emails and messages from them. “Hearing” they enjoyed my story or stories fills me with such a wonderful feeling.

Have you even been sent fan art?
•No.

What do you think makes a good story?
•The characters, the objective, the writing. But not so much of a template. I remember reading The Writer’s Journey, which is a fine book, while studying writing in college. I loved it! However, I’ve read stories that do not follow the formula put forth in the book that, nevertheless, yield a wonderful journey. I admit I’ve abandoned the formula myself a time or two and was thrilled with the results.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
•Kids usually read comic books in my area: Batman, Superman, etcetera. Instead of reading the comic books, I used to cut out the pictures and create my own storyboard. I didn’t actually know the story of the superheroes until they were made into movies, so I think I was always destined to become a writer.

What is that one weird quirk about yourself, that no one else knows?
•Wow, I actually don’t have one. It would be great to possess one. I’m just Mr. Normal.

If you had your time back what would you tell yourself about writing?
•I would tell young me to write down all those stories that I created from the comic book heroes.

Last but not least,

What advice would you give aspiring writers?
ˆRead, read, read! There are so many worlds in print. Know them, embrace them, study them.

Thank you for answers my questions :)
Thank you for the great interview.
