Stitched Up Heart by Tarina Deaton was absolutely fan-freaking-tastic!
Holy hell, I have no words, I'm suffering from a major book hangover and my heart.. my poor heart.. my girl feels are starting to suffocate me, and like Denise and Bree, I don't do - "girly emotions".
Being in the service myself, I connected with Bree and Denise on a different level then I do with other MC's, in other books. In truth how they act is similar to how I act and, interact with people. The military does a number on your social skills with normal civilians, and just with people in general. I'm not going to dwell on that, because I would be here forever.
I loved the banter, the sass, and I loved all the acronyms. It's a bad habit for all military, mostly because we love abbreviate everything. So I neatly died when Tim said "Stop speaking in alphabet soup". (My parents get pissed when I start speaking in letter code..)
There are also a few slang words that threw me, not because I didn't know them it's because I knew them. More so, they are the kind of slang words that are, you could say, exclusive to us insiders. And unless you are in constant interaction with us "in crowd"; then you won't know them. My first thought "The author did a lot of research", but the as I read on and the bickering between the amy and air force started, I was like "Ah, she's a zoomie". The swearing was also a giveaway, we military have a weird way of using the f -word, as in attaching it to anything with can think of.
Moving on to the story, there was nothing I didn't like. Normally there is one or two things that I find that aren't cohesive or dumb but, I can honestly say, I loved every second of this book. The flow was perfect, steady and the transition were seamless. At no point did I find myself lost or confused. Even the love story as a whole, sure it was insta-everything... but it was hot. Like you need to take breaks and fan yourself hot. The love progression wasn't as quick as it appeared, as both Jase and Bree were dealing with the fallout of going to war. They talked, they lashed out, and they took the time to understand one another. There was raw passion that pulls at your heart strings, there is a raw realism with these MC's, because it is a real thing.
I highly recommend this book, this series. There are no others words to say other then, it is phenomenal. I can't stress to you enough how excellently written; how masterfully crafter, this book is. I'm going to be shoving this in my friends faces.
Happy Reading

Half-Broke Heart
by Tarina Deaton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Half-Broke Heart (Combat Hearts #2.5) by Tarina Deaton had a powerhouse team of characters and I could not put this book down.
Now I will say that I have not read the other books in this series, but the story is so well written that I didn't need to. True I didn't have any background on Bree or Jase, but because they were not the main focus, it fit perfectly in with the short story theme. They intrigued me enough that I need to go back and read their story, but at the same time, it was vague enough where it doesn't ruin it.
Denise is a firecracker, tough as nails and down right badass. In truth, being in the military myself I connected with her on a different level. I got her, everything she was throwing, I got it. Being in the military isn't easy, being a woman in the military is down right frustrating. But I'm not going to bombard you with that. The only thing that I didn't like was that, there was one scene that went sideways for Chris. And I got where he was coming from, and I got where Denise was coming from. But, a part of me sided with Chris. I won't say anymore then that, because it will ruin this beauty. But you'll get it when you read this story.
Onto Chris, he's is your alpha male type. An ex-serviceman himself, turned FBI, he got all that making of a jerk character. But he was actually written more down to earth. And it worked. There is this scene at the start when he and Denise meat, and well, it gets really fun/sexy/funny as hell. I nearly died. Showing this part of his personally at the start really made Chris more then just the normal hot 2D male lead. I can't wait to read more about him in book 3.
In saying that, read this before book 3, it's a setup more then a random story between books. (I got a sneak peek of book 3, and... I need to get my hands on book 3) This is their history, their introduction, and this an insight into why they are, the way that they are. I will go as far to say that this is a must read. Even if in ends in a cliffhanger and, pretty much rips outs your heart strings one by one, (I'm going a day to recover).
Take my high recommendation that you will be entranced with this short story. It may be short but it managed to feel like a full novel, while leading you down the path for more.

Locked-Down Heart
by Tarina Deaton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Locked-Down Heart (Combat Hearts #3) by Tarina Deaton was down right everything I didn't know I needed in a streamy romance novel.
Holy, sweet baby kittens, that was one hell of a read. It has all the things I love from other two books; the witty writing, sassy bickering And Denise, she is by far one of the best female MC's I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. She hit every strong point, she was human to a point where I want to meet her and be her friend. She didn't cause useless drama, she has a lot going on, and she slowly opened up, slowly started to trust. That inner conflict was better then any, filler/trope/drama that pledges other romantic tales. Chris was her match, he could keep up with her, look her in the eyes and not shutter in fear and he knew how to brake her walls. Sure they a, interesting start, and they had further things to over come, but they stuck with it, and formed a understanding trust that was stronger then diamond.
Bee and Jase are very much present, and you get to see little tidbits of they're ever growing relationship. That and you can't have Denise without Bree, there are one. But man, I love it when they get going. They're of one mind, and know how to play off one another.
This book series as a whole is on a different level, for me, it has risen the stared for romantic books. It was not only unique but it touches on real issues that serving members have to face at home, and when the war is over. This is raw, the emotions are heart shattering, and I hope it will open some eyes.
I highly recommend you get your hands on this series asap! Like, now, right now.. go buy it!

Imperfect Heart
by Tarina Deaton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Imperfect Heart (Combat Hearts #4) by Tarina Deaton was the perfect ending to this wonderfully amazing series.
I love this series, and I'm saddened that this is the last instalment. But all good things must come to a end, even if we don't want them to. I must say this book, was just as strong as the others, and it being that last had that added closer that let you feeling like, these characters are going to be okay. I will say that though this is considered a standalone. I highly suggest reading the other books, so you can get a feel for this world, and of course, avoid spoilers.
While reading this book I was sitting here like, did Tarina Deaton just predict my future? Confused, well I am a serving member (Canadian Navy) and I currently have 12 years in, and am releasing in the next year. My plan is to somehow just surround myself with books and make money. So yeah, I drew some strong comparison between myself and our MC. Now I just need a sexy cop to come "save me" and we'd be all good. .jk.jk...
Okay enough about that, let's get into this story.
I very much like Zoe, and as I have said in my reviews of the other books in this series, you can tell it was written by someone who has served. The slang, the interactions, and just in the way Zoe acted. I believe I have said this before, but the military, no matter what country you serve in, does a number on your social skills. And the whole, "I can save myself", is also a strong trait we all seem to share.
Tim, my dream guy, why the hell are you fiction? lol.. But in all seriousness, he was a great character and fit well with Zoe. Strong, sassy, and there, he was there for her, even when she was fighting him, he was there. Sure he was a bit alpha-ish, but he's a cop, I think that's part of their job requirements.
Overall this book, was perfect. It was a perfect addition to a amazing series, and it was that perfect ending that tied up everything, leaving you feeling all gooey and happy on the inside. So please, please take my super, super, high recommendation and my gold stamp of approval, that you will be captured by this truly heart melty, feels snapping read.
