Children Of The Future
by Jane Suen
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Children Of The Future by Jane Suen was an okay read that had promise but for me fell short on the delivery.
I will start with, that wasn't my first book by Jane Suen, so going into this thriller I had high hopes, because I very much enjoyed the other books I've read. But sadly, though I did like it, I wasn't in love with it. The overall concept is really good. The disappearing children, the mysterious new shiny town that, just seems to appear a few miles away, and of course, the ending. If anything, the ending did save this book for me, but still wasn't quite enough.
This is a short read, so I can't really get into some of the things that put me off, because, major spoilers. I will say that this book did a lot of telling and not enough showing. The MC, his voice was for me, flat and, not memorable. I saw the potential, Telly was full of everything that I believe what makes a good MC, but again for me, he fell short on the delivery. Also I do have some issues with his name. Telly sounds like a dogs name, and it made me not take him as seriously as I wanted to.
As for spelling and grammar, no complaints there. The plot had a clear goal in mind, and outside for a few tone mishaps, it stayed within the urgency and thriller realm. There are some POV shifts, and they were done pretty good. They kept you engaged with both sides of the story.
As I said, the actual overall concept of this story is good, and there is so much that I feel could have been done, maybe even making it a bit longer. The pace is, sort of slow, but then fast. After the 50% mark, the story just shoots forward, then it ends rather abruptly. But again, I do love the ending. That last 15% of the book was spot on. It was chilling and, wow, that ending makes you think and it scares you, because looking back at the kidnappers goal... I can't say.. it will ruin everything.
Overall, I do recommend this book. There is something there that I truly believe needs to be looked at. This book will had you hooked, believe it or not, I did read this book in one sitting. I loved the mystery, the twist at the end, and I loved the plot. Give this book a chance, if anything, for the ending.
Happy reading.
