Jade, Terana, and Axel plodded along the path that wove down the cliffs. The way was little more than dirt and loose gravel made compact under the pressure of many footsteps, and Jade lost her footing more than once. When they’d reached the city, it was a mass of box-like buildings that were made of mud-bricks and piled atop each other like badly stacked crates. In the darkness, the buildings were indistinguishable, crowding over narrow streets that wove like tangled ribbons.
The only light peeped out from the edges of the curtains that lined every window they passed.
Once they’d crossed the Portal into Ulula, they’d huddled, waiting for nightfall, in a shallow cave at the top of the cliffs. At first, she’d passed the time by peppering Axel with questions about Ulula. What did he know about it? Where should they start looking? Axel had been unusually tight-lipped. Jade found herself grinding her teeth, frustrated at his one-word answers.
He seemed anxious and tense. He had barely spoken to Jade or Terana—not during the trek down the steep switchbacks set into the sides of the cliffs that ringed the Ululan city, nor as they wove their way through the city to a place where Axel assured them would be safe. Axel had barely even looked at her since they’d vacated the inn on Adillique. Jade ran her fingers over the jade pikorua that hung on her neck chain.
Finally, Axel stopped outside an unremarkable door. Jade wondered how he knew he’d found the right place—she couldn’t see any street number or other distinguishing feature in the dark.
Axel rapped on the door, and Jade jumped as the noise echoed through the night. They waited only a moment before a sliver of light escaped through the crack in the door to stretch across the narrow, dirt road. For a moment, there was silence, and Jade held her breath, hoping Axel hadn’t led them wrong.
Then the door was flung wide, and a figure sprang from the doorway to launch himself at Axel with all the grace of a hunting beast pouncing on its prey. Jade tensed. Before she knew it, the knife was in her hand. Axel stumbled backwards, crashing to the ground with the figure landing on top of him. Jade strode to them and grabbed the figure by the collar of his shirt and hauled him away from Axel. Panting, she pressed her knife to his throat.
