EXCERPT 1:
“. . . souls were funny
things. We think we own them, but they aren’t altogether ours. Everyone we love
gets a tiny piece of our soul and we get a bit of theirs, too. Those bits stay
with us even after we part ways or pass on. So in that way, we get the smallest
taste of eternity,” she explained. “Through those tiny pieces of our soul, we
are all immortal. If that’s true, and I believe it is, then no one who dies is
ever really gone. We carry them with us always.”
EXCERPT 2:
“She’ll be fine, Jae.”
Felix punched me in the arm. He probably thought I was worried about her
(Beckah). “She’s got more grit than any male dragonrider I’ve ever heard of. If
anyone can handle this, it’s her.”
“I know.” I turned away.
Watching the silhouette of her great, black dragon sailing away across the
night sky was too much. “But it’s more than that. Destiny is with her. She
cannot fail.”
EXCERPT 3:
“And that’s all I have to
do? Promise myself to you?” It sounded too good to be true.
“Yes. There would be a
certain ritual, of course, to make sure that you kept your word. But since I
have no doubt that a man like you would stand by his word until death, it would
be purely a formality.” His voice sounded different, as if he were smiling behind
that mask. “What do you say, Duke Farrow? Are you the dragonrider destined for
the title of Lord General?”
EXCERPT 4:
“When we were fledglings at
the academy, you went out of your way to sit with me and get to know me. I’ve
always wondered why.”
“I’d heard about the
halfbreed student who was joining our ranks. Everyone was talking about how
puny you were and that they didn’t expect you to last one day in real
training,” he recalled. “I suppose I just wanted to see for myself what you
were really like—if you were actually that brave, or just dumb.”
“And? What was the
verdict?”
Felix grinned again. “I
dunno. The jury’s still out.”
EXCERPT 5:
“This is war, Jaevid. People die—and
sometimes it’s the people we love.”
