ORIGINS I hugged a pillow and absently twirled the diamond solitaire on my ring finger, but I still couldn’t avoid staring at my new shrink’s eyebrows. They crowded his forehead like bushes and quivered as he spoke—two heaving blobs of brown hair that didn’t know quite what to do with themselves. Whatever my shrink was saying rolled over my head. What are you thinking about?” “It’s Mel. And I don’t even know where to start answering that question.” He shrugged. “The beginning is a good place. Once you get started, just keep going ‘til you hit the end.” I frowned. The beginning, huh? My first memory involved my ghost, but I couldn’t remember the first time I’d actually met him. That nameless dead boy had always been in my life. He couldn’t remember his real name, and if he did, he’d lied. But since his skin had brown bruises and a bluish-green tint, I named him Hazel.
