What is your process for creating a magically world, basically another realm?

First off, thank you for having me! I love this question! So, for Black Dawn, it really all started with me knowing how I wanted Emory’s story to go. For this story I had written the original manuscript when I was fourteen, and in both versions Emory wasn’t from Earth, but had been placed there for her protection. Her world is one that is much different from ours. When I was rewriting the story, the world building is me answering a string of questions, and an overwhelming number of notebooks where I keep my answers. This is where I hash out the characters first, my main and secondary and their stories. Once I had this, then the world came to me much easier. Emory’s parents, Nei and Roque and their history really helped hash out the details of The Academy and why it came to be (which I am really inclined to write a prequel about ) Once I had this, then my villain’s story became clearer, and then the Black Dawn Rebellion fighting against Adair Stratton was born. So, my process is figuring out the ripple effect of my character’s history, then from here I go to different locations where the events happen, different terrains and different cultures. Add in the history and culture of the magic in Kiero, and it all comes together!
