A Study In Shifters
By: Majanka Verstraete
Series: (The Adventures of Marisol Holmes, #1)
Publication date: June 26th 2018
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
Seventeen-year-old Marisol Holmes may be the great-great-great granddaughter of Sherlock Holmes, but it’s hard to live up to the family name when only one mistake can spell your downfall. After trusting the wrong guy in a case gone totally wrong, Marisol convinces the Conclave, an underground organization of detectives solving supernatural cases, to give her a last chance to prove her worth, and maybe even heal her broken heart
After all, as a half-blood jaguar shifter, Marisol is uniquely qualified to solve this murder—and every scrap of evidence points toward the culprit being a fellow jaguar shifter. But is one of her own people involved, or is this all a ploy to kick Marisol’s mother off the shifter throne?
Then Marisol discovers her best friend, Roan, is missing, and maybe the killer’s next target. The stakes just got higher than political intrigue. Just when things couldn’t get worse, Marisol’s ex-boyfriend-turned-nemesis, Mannix, starts leaving sinister clues for her. Marisol fears this case might be far more personal than she could’ve imagined.
It’s time for Marisol to prove her worth, or her people could fall into chaos while her best friend loses his life.
Let’s start with, how are you this find day?
I’m fine, thank you, how are you? Thank you so much for inviting me to your blog.
Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
Christina and I discussed together what my first book for Monster House Books would be, and then we came up with this cool idea to match Sherlock Holmes with shifters… And that’s how Marisol Holmes, great great granddaughter of Sherlock Holmes and half-shifter, was born.
When did you write your first book and how old were you?
My first book that got published, I wrote back when I was eighteen years old. Ten years ago now, wow! Time flies.
What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I like to spend time with my family and friends, and of course my two cats. I also like drawing, playing video games and binge-watching Netflix series.
What does your family think of your writing?
They’re very supportive, especially my mom. She’s my number one fan.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
I’ve learned so much from writing, but one of the most amazing things is that there is some kind of magic in writing—sometimes I write things without any idea where it’ll end up going, and then when the plot reaches the final stages and all the dots are connected, like magic, all of it matches, and something I thought was insignificant when I first wrote it turns out to be a major plot point.
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I’ve written about fifteen books now. It’s hard to say which one is my favorite, but my first ever published book, “Fractured”, will always have a special place in my heart.
Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
Most of them wonder when the next book in this or that series will release, haha. I love hearing from my readers and communicating with them, so if anyone wants to chat, you’re more than welcome to.
Have you even been sent fan art?
No, not yet. That would be pretty amazing, though!
What do you think makes a good story?
An original plot (or an original twist on a more common plot), characters a reader can relate to, a vivid setting and a world that comes to life.
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
I wanted to become president of the world, haha. Then, an author. I’ve wanted this since I was seven, so I’m thrilled that my wish became true.
What is that one weird quirk about yourself, that no one else knows?
I have a weird quirk but a lot of people know this.
I have entire conversations with my cats. Probably weird, but it’s normal for me.
If you had your time back what would you tell yourself about writing?
To start sooner, not to give up, to finish manuscripts when I start them, and again, not to give up, no matter what.
Last but not least,
What advice would you give aspiring writers?
Do not give up. No matter what life throws at you, don’t give up. Even if you get one rejection after another, if this is your dream you can’t give up on it. Keep on going, and sooner or later you’ll find a publisher that’s the right match for your book.
Thank you for answers my questions
