Synopsis:

The beast raged; it punctured the air with its spite. But the girl was fiercer.

Tea is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy makes her a bone witch, who are feared and ostracized in the kingdom. For theirs is a powerful, elemental magic that can reach beyond the boundaries of the living—and of the human.

Great power comes at a price, forcing Tea to leave her homeland to train under the guidance of an older, wiser bone witch. There, Tea puts all of her energy into becoming an asha, learning to control her elemental magic and those beasts who will submit by no other force. And Tea must be strong—stronger than she even believes possible. Because war is brewing in the eight kingdoms, war that will threaten the sovereignty of her homeland…and threaten the very survival of those she loves.

My Rating: 4 stars

This was a different read for me. But I'm glad I took a chance on this one. This was a sold read, with some really interesting issues that seem to mirror similar ones that are present in our everyday world.  It struck home with me, because I work in a heavy male dominated environment, and the need to act manly, and forgo girly things, even in this day and age, is still very real in my line of work.

I have to say, this book had a fast reading pace, but, the descriptions seems to last longer then necessary.  Towards the end of the book, things just dragged on and to me felt over explained. I get you need to ease out of the climax, but not to the point where I was actually getting board. So that's why this book gets the 4 star instead of that 5. A another go at editing won't hurt.

Outside of that, I was impressed with the family dynamic, I have brothers, so I know all to well how trying they can be. It pulled at my heart string and it was done very well in that real sort of way.

I highly recommend this book. I can't wait to real more about this world, that was book. It's dark tones and exciting plot has me hooked. I can't quiet explain it, but this book has me under it's unique spell and I need to read more.

Happy Reading.

I'll start with my all time fave.
“There is no greater strength than the ability to understand and accept your own flaws.”

And here are a few others I enjoyed.
“Then perhaps we should carve a world one day where the strength lies in who you are, rather than in what they expect you to be.”

“But when you are younger and know no better, an infatuation can lead all the world to burn.”

"kana was friendlier, though sometimes I caught her looking at me expectantly, like she was waiting for me to raise a dead rat"

"If there is one thing I have learned from both our trades, it is that we must always be in the business of forgiveness, lest we become consumed by our anger"

  1. Oh I really like that first quote you pulled out of the book. That's one of the reasons I love reading-- it helps me accept my own flaws because it shows me characters that I can relate to. I'm glad you enjoyed the book & thanks for participating in the tour!!
